The Media, Politics and Volunteerism
19 May 2023External woes and internecine strife are often overshadowed by a spirit of giving.
VOI's Josh Hasten is joined in-studio by HonestReporting's Yarden Frankl, who provides this week's examples of media bias: The New York Times doesn't believe that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas incites to violence, saying Israel only "claims" he does; and what happened to all those olive trees that CNN says were chopped down and "seized" by Israeli settlers?
Then, Josh is joined by VOI Knesset insider Jeremy Saltan to discuss the political scene. Saltan says that though the new Likud government is less than a week old, the opposition has already attempted to overthrow it with a no-confidence motion. The bill, introduced by the Yesh Atid party, failed. But could this be a sign of a tumultuous Knesset in general?
Finally, Josh talks to Atara Goldsmith of the "B'shvil" organization, whose mission is to promote the welfare of National Service volunteers -- mostly young women -- who come to Israel on their own, without family around to provide support. "B'shvil" founder Shira Lorentz is receiving the "Spirit of Zion" award at tonight's Moskowitz Prize for Zionism ceremony in Jerusalem.
