Circumcision and the Blues(25:43)
|
First, Rabbi Mike Feuer, educational director of Beit Midrash Sulam Yaakov, joins Yishai to discuss this week’s Torah portion of Eikev, from the book of Deuteronomy. They begin with a conversation about the impending circumcision, or “brit milah,” of Yishai’s newborn son, the unique parameters of this Jewish law and its powerful, bolstering message. This leads Yishai and Rabbi Feuer to ponder the “circumcision” of the heart mentioned in Eikev. They talk about how to use the lessons of the “brit,” the covenant, to connect with God and the land of Israel — and remain focused on the spiritual journey.
Then, Yishai hears Lazer Lloyd’s spiritual story and meditative music. Lloyd describes playing for the most varied of audiences and feeling the real connection we all share, before explaining what he sees as the united trifecta of blues music, hasidism and Israel. He plays three original songs in-studio: “Back Porch,” “Rocking in the Holy Land” and “My Own Blues.”
