Reserve Duty, EU ‘Land Grabs,’ Judicial Activism, and Missionary Matters(50:57)
|
As VOI’s Daniela Traub, an officer in the IDF Combat Intelligence branch, is summoned for reserve duty, she and co-host Daniel Seaman discuss the annual Israeli experience of “miluim.”
How disruptive is it to have to drop studies or work and head off to the army for a month? How do Israelis feel about doing it?
Then, Daniel and Daniela are joined in-studio by Ari Briggs, director of international relations at Regavim, to discuss the phenomenon of foreign bodies taking over Israel’s national lands. Briggs talks about illegal construction and land grabs carried out by the European Union, and how his organization is leading the fight against it.
Then, Daniel and Daniela discuss the battle between the judicial and legislative branches of Israeli governance with Idan Abuhav of the Legal Forum for Israel. What is judicial activism and how does it affect the ability of legislators to serve the public they represent? How does the elected government address this? What is more important — majority rule or minority rights?
Finally, Daniel and Daniela talk about a recent story in the news about some Israeli postal workers refusing to distribute missionary pamphlets. Why do Israelis find Christian missionary activity and proselytizing in Israel problematic?
