VOI's Gil Hoffman is joined by scholar Rabbi Asher Altschul, who says the lack of a Temple required Judaism to adapt and survive.
Rabbi Altschul, tour guide, educator, archaeologist and Jerusalem scholar, says the destruction of two holy temples did not put an end to the Jewish people, but rather resulted in Judaism ceasing to focus on its Temple and priests, and shifting more to its Book, its scholarship and learning. “Judaism took its traditions from a land- and Temple-based society,” he said. “There is no other nation that has maintained its identify for so long.”
