Steps of Jewish Identity(25:07)
|
VOI's Judy Lash Balint hears from Stanford U Prof. Janice Ross about how Jewish identity is expressed through modern dance.
Prof. Ross, author of a new book, “Like a Bomb Going Off: Leonid Yakobson and Ballet as Resistance in Soviet Russia,” is in Jerusalem to take part in a program on contemporary Jewish culture at Beit Avi Chai. She and Judy discuss how Yakobson used ballet as a cultural weapon in a totalitarian state, and why Jewish artists were so highly represented in the arts in Soviet society. They also take a look at how immigrant artists are faring in Israel today.
